When our military members are deployed far away from home on giant aircraft carriers like the USS George Washington, life gets pretty stressful. Being out at sea for months means long hours, heavy responsibilities, and missing family and friends back home.
That is why Warrior Golf Academy stepped in to launch Operation: Flight Deck, bringing a completely unique style of relief right to the ship. Instead of just sending ordinary care packages, we set up a full maritime driving range on the flight deck, complete with heavy-duty hitting mats, special GPS-guided floating targets designed by MarkSetBot, and over 6,000 eco-friendly golf balls that dissolve safely into fish food so nothing harms the ocean by SplashCity Golf.
Community Support and Student Impact
To make this mission happen, we rely heavily on incredible community support, and we want to give a massive shout-out to the Project Women Club at Boca Raton High School for taking the time to write heartfelt letters to our deployed Sailors. Knowing that students back home are thinking about them and cheering them on means the world to our troops while they are out at sea. We also want to thank our amazing presenting sponsor, BCN Telecom, alongside partners like MarkSetBot and Splash City Golf, whose generosity has helped us fund over half of our $10,000 goal for this deployment.
The Science of Golf, Morale, and Mental Health
Science and medical studies actually prove that spending time outdoors and playing sports helps lower stress, anxiety, and trauma, which is why bringing golf to active-duty service members is such a powerful tool for mental health and relaxation. Clinical trials and research from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and military medical journals show that structured outdoor recreation and sports produce measurable reductions in stress and depression while rebuilding camaraderie and morale.
For instance, VA San Diego Healthcare System research on adaptive sports programs demonstrated statistically significant increases in positive mood and immediate reductions in anxiety and stress scores among participants. Furthermore, research published in Military Medicine establishes that group-based outdoor recreation significantly predicts improved psychosocial well-being, while studies in the Journal of Clinical Psychology confirm that spending time in green spaces directly correlates with lower post-traumatic stress symptom severity.
